BYOD and 1 to 1

Updated: Jun 23, 2021

In week 11 of Technology in Music Education we discussed the definition of BYOD and 1 to 1. BYOD indicates students ‘Bring Your Own Device’ to use in class. We looked at the pros and cons of this method. It is effective as it is low cost to the school and students, students are familiar with using the device. Problems that arise when using BYOD system in schools include problems with programs only being accessible on either ios, windows or android as well as more difficulty connecting devices to a school cloud system. 1 to 1 indicates there are devices supplied by the school to ensure there is one device per student. We discussed how this is applied in NSW school with prescribed devices that can be either supplied by the school or requested to be purchased by the student. As a class we tested the BYOD system through testing 4 applications and how they are used on different devices. The app that drew my attention was Band Lab as this worked really well across all systems and worked as an interactive DAW so students and teachers can share ideas. Band Lab can be used in a browser or downloaded as an app and is intuitive and easily accessible (no I’m not being sponsored).
