Activity 3 - Structure
-Listen to and read the score of Dancing on Clouds by Paul Stanhope.
-On the second listening ask students to take note of when any material is repeated.
-On the third listening take coloured highlighters and highlight repeated or related ideas.
-Refer to highlighted score example- students may group material that is identical or related.
-Identify the A B A1 structure and note how the first section is only partially repeated before the harmonics enter.
-Discuss the use of motifs that are repeated, varied and extended. Ask one student to identify a motif and the rest of the class will find where it is repeated or varied.
-Use symbols to represent each motif then ask the class to create a graphic score using those symbols. Analyse and discuss any patterns that are apparent.
-Students will use the pieces collected for the previous collage activity 2 and identify motifs and structure of each piece.
-The class will write up the different structures that students have identified.
-Students will choose one of the structures to use in their compositions.
