Composition Starter Activity for Stage 6 (take 6)

Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Activity 6 - Ostinato and Patterns

-Refer to the inspiration collage from activity 2.

-Find a visual, audio or text that uses some form of pattern or rhythm.

e.g.

-Use the pattern or rhythm to determine the note values for your ostinato. This should be no longer than four bars (ideally one or two bars in length).

Looking at the image above the starfish relates to the ocean theme in my collage. One leg is shorter than the others so I will use this in my ostinato;

-If a student is using text to produce rhythm get them to focus on the stresses in the sentence chosen. e.g.

-The pitches used in this ostinato will be dependent on the harmonic progression* of the composition. Ask students:

a) What is the role of this ostinato? – is it harmonic a bass line?

b) how many different pitches will be/are used?

Identify ostinato in Stanhope’s score and discuss these two questions.

*Harmonic progression may be determined in another activity.

-Repeat this activity two or three times to create new ostinato.
