Activity 1 - Instrument-Specific Technique Exploration
-Students will use their instruments for this activity.
-Each student will show a compositional or extended technique that is unique to their instrument in a show-and-tell fashion.
-The class will fill out the provided worksheet describing the sound and how to create it.
-If there are multiple students on the same instrument that may collaborate to present the different techniques.
-After one instrument is presented, the class will be set a challenge to research and find:
a) How to notate this technique
b) any other techniques (the student may have missed one or two)
Any other techniques may be played either live or through video examples (depending on the difficulty). Notation is to be written on worksheets.
This activity may be made into a fun competition awarding points to students who find the most accurate information first.
-The teacher will elaborate and build on class discussion if needed to ensure the students are aware of a variety of instrument-specific techniques that may be useful in a composition.
-Extension research task: if the instrumentation of the class does not cover a variety of instrument groups, students may be asked to research techniques for
